The estimation of live fish size from archaeological cranial bones of the New Zealand blue codParapercis colias

Abstract: Twenty‐four measurements were taken on five of the paired cranial bones and the otoliths of a modern sample of 177 blue cod. Parapercis colias. Regression analysis was performed on these measurements to estimate live fork length and ungutted weight. A number of regression models were examined (linear, logarithmic, exponential and power curve) to work out the optimum estimator for each bone measurement. It was found that live fork length of this species can be estimated with a standard error of less than ±28 mm… Show more

“…Olson and James 1991;Quammen 1996;Steadman 1995Steadman , 1999Steadman , 2006aWorthy and Holdaway 2002). The large extinct taxa doubtless fell victim to over-hunting by the first humans (Anderson 1996;Quammen 1996).The evidence for this in Viti Levu is still largely lacking, but there is no other plausible reason why large taxa should persist for millennia through many climatic cycles then drop from the record about the time of human arrival. To date, no significant archaeological bone middens of extinct fauna have been recovered from Viti Levu.…”

“…Casteel (1974aCasteel ( , b, 1976 and Morales and Rosenlund (1979) provided systematic and replicable methods for measuring archaeological fish bones for reconstructing live fish weight and length. Since these pioneering works, pursuits have focused on refining approaches for assessing changes in fish populations over time, including seasonality, resource depression and changes in trophic structure (e.g., Desse and Desse-Berset 1996a, b;Leach et al 1997a;Van Neer et al 1993). …”

“…New Zealand has a greatly reduced marine biodiversity compared to the subtropical and tropical Pacific Islands, where the species richness of ichthyofauna hinders species-level identifications that are ideal for accurate size reconstructions (e.g., Boocock 1994, 1995;Leach et al 1997aLeach et al ,c, 1999a.…”
