The Ethical Implications of DALL-E: Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) images, like those produced by DALL-E, have seen explosive growth in the past several years and have the potential to disrupt numerous markets. While the technology offers exciting opportunities for creativity and innovation, it also raises important ethical considerations that must be addressed. These ethical implications include issues related to bias and discrimination, privacy, job displacement, and unintended consequences. To mitigate these challenges, a multi-disciplinary app… Show more

“…In this cluster, concerns about negative impacts on human creativity, particularly through text-to-image models, are prevalent 80,130,140,141 . Papers criticize financial harms or economic losses for artists 47,52,135,142 due to the widespread generation of synthetic art as well as the unauthorized and uncompensated use of artists' works in training datasets 52,133 . Additionally, given the challenge of distinguishing synthetic images from authentic ones 142,143 , there is a call for systematically disclosing the non-human origin of such content 136 , particularly through watermarking 53,144,145 .…”

“…This reaction could further exacerbate the negative bias towards AI-generated images, as these individuals may perceive AI art as a lesser form of creativity, lacking the emotional depth and unique perspective offered by human artists in an anthropocentric perspective 53 . Additionally, this negative bias might be influenced by concerns about the potential implications of AI-generated art on the art world, such as the devaluation of human-created art and the loss of artistic jobs as AI technology becomes more cost-effective, fast, and accessible 62 . Furthermore, some people may think AI-art is unethical due to the ongoing dispute about the use of copyrighted art images in the AI algorithm trainings [63][64][65] .…”

“…Dall-E: Dall-E, another groundbreaking AI tool from OpenAI, generates realistic images and art from simple textual prompts. DALL-E uses a state-of-the-art deep learning model to produce high-quality, detailed images (Zhou and Nabus, 2023) that can be used by HR to communicate safety policies, safe working rules, or hazard warning signs with graphics. The potential of DALL-E is exciting, as it opens up new possibilities for creativity and artistic expression for employee training and safety in the workplace.…”
