The evolutionary potential of single-mode optical fibre systems

Abstract: Single-mode optical fibre systems presently being installed in the BT network are primarily operating at 140 Mbit/s and 1.3 μm wavelength. There is scope for increasing the information capacity of these installed systems by both electrical and optical techniques. Three feasible upgrade options will be discussed and results of experiments performed at British Telecom Research Laboratories (BTRL) presented. 1.A diet rich in fibre
