The Factor Structure of the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination, Third Edition

Abstract: Objective: The Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE) is one of the most commonly used aphasia batteries. The newest edition has undergone significant revisions since its original publication in 1972, but existing evidence for its validity is lacking. We examined the construct validity of BDAE-3 and identified the factor structure of this battery. Method: A total of 355 people with aphasia of various types and severity completed neuropsychological evaluations to assess their patterns of language impairme… Show more

“…The inform included the purpose, procedures, risks, benefits, confidentiality, and participants' rights. Once we acquired the consent forms, the participants were assessed by professional evaluators for the modified Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE) (Fong et al, 2019) to determine non-fluent aphasia types. The clinical researchers screened patients based on BDAE scores to confirm whether they had an abnormal speech function.…”

“…The final evaluation was measured after 8 weeks. The test sessions consisted of the (1) BDAE (Fong et al, 2019) and (2) Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA)/Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) (Spreen and Risser, 2003). During the evaluation process, no participants wore a 24-h Holter test or a 24-h ambulatory blood pressure test; no participants had unsealed tracheostomy and had difficulty expecting sputum.…”

“…The aphasia grading standard of severity from the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE) was taken as the primary outcome of treatment effectiveness. 16 As the original BDAE edition was not suitable for Chinese participants, a revised BDAE-Chinese (BDAE-C), 17 18 based on Chinese culture and language, has now been established as the standard for Chinese patients. The BDAE-C aphasia grading standard of severity has six grades: 0 (worst) to 5 (best).…”

“…Previous studies have shown no main differences in the results of the Mini-Mental State Evaluation (MMSE) test, the most common tool for preliminary cognitive screening, if administered via telehealth or FTF [ 11 , 12 ]. Other neuropsychological tests investigated in telemedicine were ADAS-Cog [ 13 ], clock drawing [ 14 ], Oral Trails [ 15 ], the Boston naming test, the picture description test (auditory response version), the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE) [ 16 ], letter and category fluency [ 17 ], Digit Span [ 18 ], Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status [ 18 , 19 ], the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLT-R), IQCODE [ 20 ], the Aural Comprehension of Words and Phrases (ACWP) and Controlled Oral Word Association Test [ 21 ], and the Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS) [ 22 ].…”
