The ferroelectric phase transition in a 500 nm sized single particle of BaTiO3 tracked by coherent X-ray diffraction

Abstract: The shapes and sizes of grains influence the anisotropy of crystal structures and the configuration of ferroelectric domains. In order to better understand these effects, we introduce a method to observe a ferroelectric phase transition in a single ferroelectric particle of sub-micrometer size. The phase transition was observed by cooling the sample through its Curie temperature, and studying the pattern variations of Bragg coherent X-ray diffraction from a single particle of 500-nm-sized BaTiO3. A change from… Show more

“…BTO NPs have been imaged before using this technique. [31][32][33] Figure 5a-d shows the BCDI reconstructions of the BTO ethanol, PG, butanediol, and 240 °C samples. We measured several nanocrystals from each set of synthesis conditions in our BCDI experiments, and the reconstructions shown here are representative.…”

“…The acceleration voltage was 200 kV. The Bragg-CDI was carried out on the coherent X-ray scattering station installed at BL22XU of SPring-8. The incident X-ray energy was set to 8 keV. The Pb 0.82 Sr 0.18 VO 3 particles were mounted onto a STEM grid (ELS-C10, Okenshoji) with a laminated structure consisting of a 15–20 nm-thick polymer, 20–25 nm-thick C, and 25 μm-thick Cu sheets.…”

“…For these measurements, the temperature was maintained between 303 K (30 °C) and 573 K (300 °C) within ±1 K. The measured temperature tolerances and drift velocities were similar to those reported in previous studies. 27,29)…”
