The first full host plant dataset of Curculionidae Scolytinae of the world: tribe Xyleborini LeConte, 1876

Abstract: Xyleborini is the largest tribe of Scolytinae accounting for about 1300 species worldwide; all species are primarily xylomycetophagous, developing on symbiotic fungi farmed in plant woody tissues. Xyleborini wood-boring action, associated with the inoculum of symbiotic fungi, can lead, sometimes, to the emergence of host plant dieback, wood damage and death; for this reason, multiple Xyleborini are major pests on both cultivated, forest and ornamental trees. Many Xyleborini are invasive worldwide and great eff… Show more

“…A specific definition of host plant was used in the compilation of this database, in accordance with Ruzzier et al . 19 . Only records of scolytine species observed boring inside any plant part or tissue (both at adult and larval stage) were accepted as a potential scolytine-plant association.…”

“…Economic use of plant species was organized in three categories: 1) Food and pharmaceutical (human and animal food, plants used in medicine - also folklore -, materials for food, chemical/pharmaceutical industry, etno-biological use, and bee plants); 2) Material (plants used as materials, furniture and fuel); 3) Environmental (plants of ornamental, shade and shelter, or domestic usage). The classification and names of economic uses were modified with respect to the one presented in the previous work on Xyleborini 19 , so any future updates will follow this new classification.…”

“…The data confirm that the species is widely distributed and relatively common in northern Italy, Lombardy in particular. Although Anisandrus maiche is a modestly polyphagous species on broadleaf trees ( Ruzzier et al 2023 ), no damage attributable to this species has been recorded so far.…”

“… Ambrosiophilus atratus is a highly polyphagous species, capable of developing in both hardwoods and conifers ( Ruzzier et al 2023 ). Recent observations, coupled with the lack of damage attributable to the species, however, seem to suggest that A.…”
