The first indexes? Eusebius’s canon tables

Jolanta N. Komornicka

Abstract: The early origins of the index owe much to the development of the codex and the history of early Christian biblical texts. This article explores the Christian and book context of the canon tables created by Eusebius of Caesarea, suggesting that what looks at first like a list of numbers was in fact an early form of index and used as such by its readers.
