Abstract-This paper presents the results for a feasibility study of a solar chimney which uses low-grade waste heat from compost in conjunction with solar energy transmitted via a transparent roof top. The feasibility study shows that the solar chimney's turbine power increases with pressure ratio, the height of the chimney as well as the differential temperature in the chamber. This paper also outlines the thermodynamic modeling related to using waste heat from composting to increase the air temperature in the inlet chamber of a solar chimney. It is found that from this analysis that the average temperature in the chamber increases as a function of the chimney inlet chamber axial length. The combined raw in input total heat gain for this hybrid solar composting chimney is found to be 6.24 MW of which 66% (4.12 MW) is comprised of solar, and 34% (2.12 MW) is comprised of composting energy Index Terms-Composting, waste heat recovery, solar updraft tower .

The increased utilization of solar energy has gained the attention of researchers to develop the solar chimney (SC) technology in recent years. Many studies have been conducted in this aear both experimentally and theoretically, whereas experimental studies are mainly focused on small-scale systems. This work provides a comprehensive and updated review that include most of the experimental studies, analytical and simulation works, the solar chimney applications, hybrid systems and geographical case studies based on extended references, citation of the updated works and the specified way of looking at different sections. The technological gaps in differnet sections are identified and a summary of suggestions is given for the future work, including more experimental works on the large-scale systems, and CFD analyses for optimization between the geometrical parameters and the output power. More studies on new applications of solar chimney technology including hybrid systems are also recommended.

Solar energy sources are alternative solutions to creating energy by the use of solar radiation. The solar chimney power plants (SCPPs) are non-concentrated thermal systems that use the solar radiation to produce green energy. The main components of an SCPP are a collector, an absorber, a chimney, and a turbine that is coupled with a generator. The feasibility study of these thermal devices is required. In this paper, a study of a solar chimney power plant is reported. In fact, a numerical investigation of the obstacle effect on the distributions of the airflow in a solar chimney is presented using the commercial CFD code Ansys Fluent. The comparison between numerical and experimental findings has shown good agreement for the considered instance. Accordingly, the presented numerical model is capable of estimating the airflow characteristics inside the solar device. Results showed that the placement of obstacles at the collector output favors the performance of an existing solar chimney. The generated power could be enhanced by 11.5% using one obstacle and 14.75% using two obstacles.
