The first study on seroprevalence and risk factors for zoonotic transmission of ovine and caprine brucellosis in the Province of Bam, Burkina Faso

Abstract: Background and Aim: Brucellosis is a bacterial disease notorious for its ability to infect a wide range of domestic and wildlife animals, as well as humans. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of ovine and caprine brucellosis and the associated risk factors in the Province of Bam in Burkina Faso. Materials and Methods: The individual serological status of 300 unvaccinated sheep and 300 unvaccinated goats was determined by Rose Bengal and indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA) serolog… Show more

“…Moreover, females were found to be more infected than males. Generally, there are very few males in the herds and in addition, the females abort which is one of the remarkable and visible signs of brucellosis (Tialla, 2022). Ali et al (2015), reported same findings in Punjab (Pakistan) where low seroprevalence was recorded in males (3.03%) as compared to females (10.4%).…”

“…A higher seroprevalence in goats than in sheep has also been described in other countries including Ethiopia [32], Iran [33], and Kosovo [34]. However, higher prevalences were reported in sheep than goats in Burkina Faso [35] and India [36]. These variations in results from different studies can be attributed to different management systems, study designs, and sample sizes.…”

“…In any case, these assays do not outperform the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity (DSe and DSp) of the classical buffered Brucella agglutination tests (Rose Bengal [RBT], Card and Buffered Plate Agglutination tests) that do not suffer from cut-off adjustment problems [ 50 ]. There are abundant examples of these problems in the recent literature [ 52 , 53 , 54 , 55 , 56 , 61 , 62 , 66 , 68 , 71 , 88 , 89 , 90 , 91 , 92 , 93 , 94 , 95 , 96 , 97 , 98 , 99 , 100 , 101 , 102 , 103 , 104 , 105 , 106 , 107 , 108 ].…”
