The Fish Community Index: A Practical Management Tool for Monitoring and Reporting Estuarine Ecological Condition

Abstract: Indicators of ecological health based on biological communities, including numerous multimetric indices, are used worldwide to assess and report the condition of aquatic ecosystems such as estuaries. Yet, these tools have rarely been applied to support estuary management in Australia. We present a case study of one such multimetric indicator, the Fish Community Index (FCI), which was developed and applied to quantify the ecological condition of estuaries in southwestern Australia (SWA). We outline the rational… Show more

“…Indicators of ecological health based on biological communities are widely used to assess and report the condition and status of aquatic ecosystems [70]. Changes in the structure of the ecosystem can affect the functioning of the system and can result in the loss of economic and ecological values [55], therefore, it becomes very important to consider the impacts of environmental variability.…”

“…The internationalization process is a dynamic concept, namely the process of adding internationalization operations both externally and internally (Hallett, 2012). The internationalization process is the process by which companies raise awareness of the direct and indirect impacts of future international transactions, and establish and conduct transactions with other countries (Kaukab, 2017).…”

“…Although there are many biological assessment methods using various taxa as such, the index of biological integrity (IBI) [24] assessment method using fish is representative. In this regard, in overseas countries, Cabral et al [25] developed an estuarine fish assessment index (EFAI) using fish according to the characteristics of the Portuguese estuaries and conducted overall assessments of brackish water zones, and Hallett et al [26] assessed brackish water zones using the fish community index (FCI) for efficient estuary management in Australia.…”
