The flower fly genus Eosphaerophoria Frey (Diptera, Syrphidae)

Abstract: Th e fl ower fl y genus Eosphaerophoria is revised. Eight new species are described (adornata sp. n. Mengual, bifi da sp. n. Mengual, brunettii sp. n. Ghorpadé, hermosa sp. n. Mengual, luteofasciata sp. n. Mengual, nigrovittata sp. n. Mengual, symmetrica sp. n. Mengual, and vietnamensis sp. n. Mengual), and an identifi cation key is provided. Redescriptions, illustrations, synonymies, diagnoses and distributional data are given for all 11 known species of Eosphaerophoria. Th e new described species increase th… Show more

“…By definition, New Guinea Island is not a hotspot but it has the highest known diversity of the genus Citrogramma in number of species: a total of 15 described species and two other not formally described species, plus another species, C. solomonense , found in Boungainville and New Britain islands (two provinces of PNG but not New Guinea Island). Similar high species diversity in New Guinea was reported for the syrphid genus Eosphaerophoria Frey, 1946 (Mengual & Ghorpadé, 2010).…”

“…The Allograpta – Sphaerophoria clade was recovered and studied by Mengual, Ståhls & Rojo (2008a, b), but Citrogramma was not included because of the lack of available molecular data. Recently, Mengual & Ghorpadé (2010) included Citrogramma in the identification key for genera related with Eosphaerophoria .…”

“…Perhaps the first taxonomic article to show how embedded hyperlinks may bring vital additional information to a published taxonomic text (i.e., to enhance it) is the famous “ Chromis article” of Pyle et al (2008) . Shortly after its publication, use of hyperlinks to external resources, such as Zoobank ( http://www.zoobank.org ), Morphbank ( http://www.morphbank.org ), Genbank ( http://www.genbank.org ), and others, started to become, if not ordinary, a relatively unremarkable feature of taxonomic papers (e.g., Miller et al 2009 , Talamas et al 2009 , Mengual and Ghorpadé 2010 ). The hyperlinking of text strings has often been enriched through additional enhancements, such as publication of datasets ( Costello 2009 , Smith 2009 , Chavan and Ingwersen 2009 , Miller et al 2009 , Penev et al 2009a ) and interactive keys ( Sharkey et al 2009 , Penev et al 2009b ).…”
