The function of polymers in the tape casting of alumina

Abstract: Polymeric additivess have a great influence on the processing parameters in the produciton of high‐performance ceramics. The various types of additives are described and the interactions between the organic additives and the inorganic ceramic powders, some examples of which are shown in the figure, are examined with emphasis on one of the most important ceramic forming processes.

“…Based on the visual inspections, the PVB appeared fully dissolved in both solvents. However differences in solubility may affect the dispersion of the PVB polymers, and their mutual interaction degree, which may also play a role [24].…”

“…Deflocculants, binders and plasticizers are required to provide the consistency and flexibility necessary for handling. [86,99] In the last years, an increased interest in aqueous tape casting has arisen because of the obvious lower cost, health, and environmental benefits of using water. [100][101][102][103] However, aqueous tape casting has important drawbacks, such as the low evaporation rate in comparison to nonaqueous suspensions.…”

“…After evaporation, the binder molecules form organic bridges between copper particles and carbon fibres, resulting in high mechanical properties of the green tape. [10,11] The binder must be removed easily at low temperature without residues.…”
