The gamma camera as an absolute measurement device: Determination of glomerular filtration rate in 99mTc-DTPA renography using a dual head gamma camera

Abstract: Since the recording of the renal count rates in the anterior and posterior views permits an accurate determination of the split renal function, the GCM yields reliable estimates also of the single kidney GFR.

“…99m Tc-DTPA renal dynamic imaging (modified Gate’s method) was measured by Millennium TMMPR SPECT using the General Electric Medical System. 99m Tc-DTPA renal imaging showed good agreement with plasma clearance of 51Cr EDTA 13. The 99m Tc-DTPA renal dynamic imaging method used was as previously described 8.…”

“…(8,9) Chronic obstructed kidney with renographic GFR < 10 mL/min/1.73 m 2 is widely accepted as nonsalvageable. (6,10) Meanwhile, the threshold of differential function at which irreversible loss of renal function should be considered is usually accepted as < 15%-20%.…”

“…There were random errors in both cases due to the assessment of attenuation Technique for analysis of geometric mean renography Fleming 707 thickness from lateral measurements. In principle, errors for the geometric mean technique should be less than this if transmission measurements were used to determine attenuation correction factors [14]. This study has not been able to assess the accuracy of either method, as the true value of renal uptake is not known.…”

“…It is of note that while this seems intuitively a reasonable assumption, the errors involved have never been rigorously evaluated. However, total renal uptake from geometric mean measurements in renography with 99m Tc-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid ( 99m Tc-DTPA) has been used to calculate glomerular filtration rate [14]. The values obtained were shown to correlate well with blood sample measurements.…”
