Men show a significantly higher suicide rate, are less often recognized as persons at risk, and are more difficult to reach for suicide prevention interventions. Warning signs and deterioration in mental health are often not recognized by their surroundings. This study aims to retrospectively analyze the behavior and communication of men before a suicide, how relatives noticed changes, and how the interaction was perceived. N = 15 individuals who lost a close male relative to suicide were interviewed using psychological autopsy interviews. The interviews were evaluated following a deductive–inductive approach while using a comprehensive category system. The majority of men showed changes in behavior before the suicide, especially social withdrawal, irritability, and generally a deterioration in mental health. In fact, men did communicate their suicidal thoughts before they died through suicide, but mainly indirectly. While only one-third of the deceased made preparations before suicide, the majority of relatives noticed a deterioration in the mental health of the individual as well as increased alcohol and substance use. Men show signs of suicide, which are little recognized by their surroundings. Suicide prevention interventions should be adapted more to the needs of men.

The COVID-19 pandemic is related to changes in rates of suicide and suicide attempts in many countries, and some differences have been observed regarding the prevalence of suicidal behaviours in different age and gender groups. The aim of this study is to analyse the number of suicides and suicide attempts per 100,000 people between 2019 and 2021 in Poland. Using police and government data on suicide and suicide attempts in Poland, three age categories were investigated: 13–24 years old, 25–65 years old, and above 65 years old, and the analysis encompassed the whole population and the populations of men and women separately. Study results indicated an increase in suicide attempts in the two younger age categories (aged 7–24 years and 25–65 years) between 2021 and 2019–2020. There was an increase in suicide among women in all age categories during the study period, whilst no increase was observed in suicide in men in any age group. The differences in the prevalence of suicide and attempted suicide in Poland during the COVID-19 pandemic in different age and gender groups indicate the need for tailored suicide prevention activities.

Suicide remains a leading cause of death in the United States, and recent data suggests that suicide deaths involving opioids are increasing. Given unprecedented increases in drug poisoning deaths, suicidality, and suicide deaths in recent years, an updated examination of the trends in suicide deaths involving opioids is warranted. In this descriptive epidemiologic analysis, we leverage final and provisional mortality data from CDC WONDER to examine trends in suicide deaths involving opioid poisoning from 1999 – 2021 by biological sex. Results reveal complex changes over time: the number and age-adjusted rate of suicide deaths involving opioid poisoning among male and female residents tended to track together, and both increased through 2010, but then diverged with the number and rate of suicide deaths involving opioid poisoning among female residents outpacing that of male residents. However, the number and rate of suicide deaths involving opioid poisoning among male residents then began to stabilize, while that of female residents declined, closing the sex-based gap. Across all years of data, the proportion of suicide deaths that involved opioid poisoning was consistently higher among female decedents (5.8% – 11.0%) compared to male decedents (1.4% – 2.8%). Findings have implications for improved suicide prevention and harm reduction efforts.
