The Genetics of the Major Central Nervous System Malformations, Based on the South Wales Sociogenetic Investigation

Abstract

SUMMARY A preliminary report is given of a family study from South Wales based on 424 index patients with spina bifida and 361 with anencephaly. Overall, a little more than 5 per cent of the brothers and 7 per cent of the sisters had spina bifida or anencephaly, that is about 8 times the normal population incidence in South Wales. RESUMEN Se dan los resultados de una investigateón en Gales del Sur de las familias de 424 enfermos afectos del bifidismo espinal y de 361 anencéfalos. Entre todos, un poco más del 5 por ciento de los hermanos y del 7 por ciento de las hermanas eran afectos del bifidismo espinal o de anencefalía; incidencia de 8 veces más de lo normal en Gales del Sur.
