The GLIM Criteria Represent a More Appropriate Tool for Nutritional Assessment in Patients With Crohn's Disease

Abstract: BackgroundThe early recognition of malnutrition is essential for improving the prognosis of patients with Crohn's disease (CD). The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria represent a new consensus for the diagnosis of malnutrition but need to be validated in CD. The aims were to explore the related factors of malnutrition in CD and explore whether GLIM-positive patients who did not meet the Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS 2002) would benefit from nutritional treatment.MethodsThis stu… Show more

“…The combination of at least 1 phenotypic and 1 etiological index was a necessary condition for the diagnosis of malnutrition. [ 22 ] The details of the GLIM are as follows [ 17 ] : (1) weight loss: a nonvolitional weight loss of 5% to 10% within the past 6 months, or 10% to 20% beyond 6 months was defined as moderate malnutrition. A nonvolitional weight loss of > 10% within the past 6 months, or > 20% prior to the past 6 months was considered to indicate severe malnutrition.…”

“…The GLIM criteria were used to evaluate the diagnosis and severity of malnutrition and were composed of three phenotypic and two etiological criteria. “…The GLIM criteria analyze aetiologic and phenotypic parameters in patients at risk of malnutrition and grade malnutrition according to phenotypic criteria ( 35 ). Li et al ( 36 ) conducted a retrospective nutritional assessment of 108 CD patients using NRS-2002 and GLIM criteria. The prevalence of perianal lesions in that population was 54.6%.…”

“…Approximately 70% of patients were classified as malnourished when applying the GLIM criteria. The presence of perianal disease was not associated with a higher risk of malnutrition ( 36 ).…”
