We collected 35,211 global tweets and used Bayesian statistical modeling to test the implications of our theory. Our findings support the idea that as a cou… Show more

“…We proceed to discussing how the previously mentioned exogenous shocks may influence the relationships discussed above. Although the #MeToo movement began in 2006, it gained global recognition after Alyssa Milano’s 2017 call for people who had been harassed or assaulted to engage with the movement (Lee and Murdie, 2021). In her call to action, Milano discussed using social media as a vehicle to bring attention to issues such as gender harassment (Brown and Battle, 2020).…”

“…4 Nevertheless, recalling a notorious statement by the American Psychological Association from 1993, even in the US, sexual harassment seemed to be a "problem with a long past, but a short history" (Rothgerber et al 2020). Fast forward to nearly three decades later, and the growing public opposition to sexism, harassment and violence is attributable to the possibilities of the interconnected public space of social media, in what is often labelled as the "#MeToo movement" (Lee and Murdie 2020).…”

“…Nevertheless, Lee and Murdie (2020) posit that studying the construction and negotiation of discourses on sexual harassment and violence of the "#MeToo era" in the online environment requires the consideration of the local cultural context, including the possibilities of the political and legal conditions. In order to understand how individuals make sense of and deploy the narratives of harassment and violence, we need to look at the recent developments of the legal framework, as well as the resonance of public discourses, especially those of the mainstream media.…”

“…Because of the way Twitter is structured (e.g., its emphasis on concision, the retweet function), tweets and their hashtags have the potential for a very broad reach and to encourage the rapid spread of information beyond the author’s visible network, gathering quickly attention to a cause (Dadas 2017 )—sometimes globally, even if contextual realities, institutional norms and local politics can constrain and (re)frame the issues discussed in the Twittersphere (Ofori-Parku and Moscato 2018 ). Consider, for instance, the notorious case of the #MeToo movement and its transnational dimension (Xiong et al 2019 ; Lee and Murdie 2020 ).…”
