The global dust SED: tracing the nature and evolution of dust with DustEM

Abstract: The Planck and Herschel missions are currently measuring the far-infrared to millimeter emission of dust, which combined with existing IR data, will for the first time provide the full spectral energy distribution (SED) of the galactic interstellar medium dust emission, from the mid-IR to the mm range, with an unprecedented sensitivity and down to spatial scales ∼30 . Such a global SED will allow a systematic study of the dust evolution processes (e.g. grain growth or fragmentation) that directly affect the SE… Show more

“…As TIR emission can be enhanced by low-luminosity AGN and old stellar populations, that are unrelated to star-formation, the discrepancy of the TIR-estimated SFRs is likely easily explained. The discrepancy of the PAH-estimated SFRs is however not so easily explained, and may be due to the fact that PAH emission (like TIR emission) can trace star-formation regions with softer UV radiation fields than those traced in the FUV and at 22 µm (e.g., Compiègne et al 2011). The higher PAH SFRs therefore apparently call for less massive star formation.…”

“…In particular, small carbonaceous grains follow a power law and are not divided into separate dust populations as in previous dust models (e.g. , 2007Compiègne et al 2011), their optical properties are continuous and size-dependent from bulk material down to 0.3 nm, therefore making the characterisation of the grains more physical.…”
