The grape rootworm, Fidia viticida (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), newly recorded from Quebec

Abstract: The occurrence of the North American native grape rootworm, Fidia viticida Walsh (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is reported for the first time in Quebec. During the summer of 2016, adults were beaten from Virginia creeper, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, and riverbank grape, Vitis riparia, along the Papineau-Leblanc Highway in Laval, Quebec. Fidia viticida is a pest of cultivated grapes in the Lake Erie area. Its current pest status in Canada is unknown.La présence du gribouri de la vigne, Fidia viticida Walsh (Col… Show more

“…The brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys-Pentatomidae) [61] has been reported in the Montreal area from 2008 to 2018 [62,63] but, as of 2020, it has not been reported as a pest of vineyards. The grape rootworm (Fidia viticida-Chrysomelidae), an insect native to North America hitherto restricted to Ontario in Canada, was found in 2016 associated with Parthenocissus quinquefolia and Vitis riparia in Laval, QC [64]. Absent before 2018, the grape plume moth (Geina periscelidactylus-Pterophoridae) was recently found in Quebec vineyards.…”

“…Native from North America, the grape rootworm (Fidia viticida-Chrysomelidae) was so far restricted to Eastern USA [33] and southern Ontario. In 2016, F. viticida adults were sampled in Laval, Qc, by beating virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) and riverbank grape (Vitis riparia) [48]. F. viticida is currently under biovigilance in Quebec because it was reported as a serious pest in Erie County in Pennsylvania [49].…”

“…For a majority of vineyards that implement integrated pest management programmes, cicadellid populations are naturally regulated by the predatory mites Anystis baccarum (Linnaeus) (Acari: Anystidae), Typhlodromus, Scheuten and Neoseiulus Hughes (Acari: Phytoseiidae). Native to Ontario, the grape rootworm (Fidia viticida Walsh (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)) was first found in Québec in 2016 (Vincent et al 2017).…”
