The Grasp Reflex and Moro Reflex in Infants: Hierarchy of Primitive Reflex Responses

Abstract: The plantar grasp reflex is of great clinical significance, especially in terms of the detection of spasticity. The palmar grasp reflex also has diagnostic significance. This grasp reflex of the hands and feet is mediated by a spinal reflex mechanism, which appears to be under the regulatory control of nonprimary motor areas through the spinal interneurons. This reflex in human infants can be regarded as a rudiment of phylogenetic function. The absence of the Moro reflex during the neonatal period and early in… Show more

“…Moreover, even if in most of the human societies infants do not grasp their mother but are rather held actively by her or a related person2627, touching the palm of a baby’s hand readily elicits a reflex called a “palmar grasp reflex” or “clinging reflex”. This reflex consist of the flexion of all the fingers around the elicitor’s finger followed by a clinging phase28. This reflex allows newborn primates to support their own weight for several minutes when holding onto a horizontal rod2930.…”

“…17, n. 32, 2017vol.
