We present data and initial results from VLT/X-Shooter emission-line spectroscopy of 96 galaxies selected by long γ-ray bursts (GRBs) at 0.1 < z < 3.6, the largest sample of GRB host spectra available to date. Most of our GRBs were detected by Swift and 76% are at 0.5 < z < 2.5 with a median z med ∼ 1.6. Based on Balmer and/or forbidden lines of oxygen, nitrogen, and neon, we measure systemic redshifts, star formation rates (SFR), visual attenuations (A V ), oxygen abundances (12 + log(O/H)), and emission-line widths (σ). We study GRB hosts up to z ∼ 3.5 and find a strong change in their typical physical properties with redshift. The median SFR of our GRB hosts increases from SFR med ∼ 0.6 M yr −1 atO ] at higher redshifts leads to an increasing distance of GRB-selected galaxies to the locus of local galaxies in the Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagram. There is weak evidence for a redshift evolution in A V and σ, with the highest values seen at z ∼ 1.5 (A V ) or z ∼ 2 (σ). Oxygen abundances of the galaxies are distributed between 12 + log(O/H) = 7.9 and 12 + log(O/H) = 9.0 with a median 12 + log(O/H) med ∼ 8.5. The fraction of GRB-selected galaxies with super-solar metallicities is ∼20% at z < 1 in the adopted metallicity scale. This is significantly less than the fraction of total star formation in similar galaxies, illustrating that GRBs are scarce in high metallicity environments. At z ∼ 3, sensitivity limits us to probing only the most luminous GRB hosts for which we derive metallicities of Z 0.5 Z . Together with a high incidence of Z ∼ 0.5 Z galaxies at z ∼ 1.5, this indicates that a metallicity dependence at low redshift will not be dominant at z ∼ 3. Significant correlations exist between the hosts' physical properties. Oxygen abundance, for example, relates to A V (12 + log(O/H) ∝ 0.17 · A V ), line width (12 + log(O/H) ∝ σ 0.6 ), and SFR (12 + log(O/H) ∝ SFR 0.2 ). In the last two cases, the normalization of the relations shift to lower metallicities at z > 2 by ∼0.4 dex. These properties of GRB hosts and their evolution with redshift can be understood in a cosmological context of star-forming galaxies and a picture in which the hosts' properties at low redshift are influenced by the tendency of GRBs to avoid the most metal-rich environments.

Aims. We present a detailed study of the host galaxy of GRB 011121 (at z = 0.36) based on high-resolution imaging in 5 broad-band, optical and near-infrared filters with HST and VLT/ISAAC. Methods. The surface brightness profile of this galaxy is best fitted by a Sersic law with index n ∼ 2-2.5 and a rather large effective radius (∼7.5 kpc). Both the morphological analysis and the F450W-F702W colour image suggest that the host galaxy of GRB 011121 is either a disk-system with a rather small bulge, or one hosting a central, dust-enshrouded starburst. Hence, we modeled the integrated spectral energy distribution of this galaxy by combining stellar population and radiative transfer models, assuming properties representative of nearby starburst or normal star-forming, Sbc-like galaxies. Results. A range of plausible fitting solutions indicates that the host galaxy of GRB 011121 has a stellar mass of 3.1-6.9 × 10 9 M , stellar populations with a maximum age ranging from 0.4 to 2 Gyr, and a metallicity ranging from 1 to 29 per cent of the solar value, as a function of the time elapsed since star formation started. As for the opacity, starburst models suggest this galaxy to be nearly as opaque as local starbursts (with an A V = 0.27-0.76 mag). On the other hand, normal star-forming Sbc-like models suggest a central opacity larger than that of local disks by up to a factor of 8, whereas the attenuation along the line of sight is only A V = 0.12-0.57 mag owing to the galaxy's low inclination. For this subluminous galaxy (with L B /L B = 0.26), we determine a model-dependent star formation rate (SFR) of 2.4-9.4 M yr −1 , which gives a SFR per unit luminosity of 9.2-36.−1 and a SFR per unit stellar mass of 0.4-2.9 × 10 −9 yr −1 . The former specific SFR is high compared to those of most GRB host galaxies, but consistent with those of most of the hosts at similar low redshift. Conclusions. Our results suggest that the host galaxy of GRB 011121 is a rather large disk-system in a relatively early phase of its star formation history.

Abstract. We present a preliminary data release from our multi-year campaign at Keck Observatory to study the host galaxies of a large sample of Swift-era gamma-ray bursts via multi-color ground-based optical imaging and spectroscopy. With over 160 targets observed to date (and almost 100 host detections, most of which have not previously been reported in the literature) our effort represents the broadest GRB host survey to date. While targeting was heterogeneous, our observations span the known diversity of GRBs including short bursts, long bursts, spectrally soft GRBs (XRFs), ultra-energetic GRBs, X-ray faint GRBs, dark GRBs, SN-GRBs, and other sub-classes. We also present a preview of our database (currently available online via a convenient web interface) including a catalog of multi-color photometry, redshifts and line ID's. Final photometry and reduced imaging and spectra will be available in the near future.
