A theoretical study has been carried out to investigate the performance of the TSI 3020 condensation nucleus counter (CNC) at various pressures and flow rates by assuming a parabolic velocity profile in the condenser tube and solving the heat and mass transfer equations using the finite difference method. Calculations have been performed for pressures ranging from 0.03 to 10 atm and sampling flow rates from 0.5 to 50 mL 1s. The results indicate that the counting efficiency of the CNC is a function of pressure and flow rate due to changes in heat and mass transfer rates. The counting efficiency can be correlated with a single parameter, f , which combines the effects due to pressure, sampling flow rate, and the length and diameter of the condenser tube. The cut size of the instrument, Dp,,, defined as the particle size at which the counting efficiency is 50%, has been found to vary with pressures, reaching a minimum at a pressure of approximately 1 atm. The cut size of the CNC has been found to be most sensitive to the temperature difference between the saturator and condenser but relatively insensitive to the flow rate and the saturator temperature.

This study compares the capabilities of the conventional and quadrature methods of moments to describe condensational growth in a well-known laminar ow aerosol reactor model. Governing equations for energy, lower order radial moments of the particle size distribution, and vapor transport are written for a twodimensional model using both approaches.Conventional and quadrature techniques to obtain closure of the moment equations are applied and compared. The conventional method requires certain approximations to the growth law. These include assumptions that the Kelvin effect is negligible and that the particle growth rate function is linear in particle size. In contrast, restrictive constraints of the conventional method of moments to obtain closure are avoided by applying the quadrature method. Numerical results for the laminar ow aerosol reactor model are obtained for a six moment formulation of the seed particle distribution to illustrate application of the quadrature method to continuous polydisperse distributions. We present the rst calculations with the new quadrature method of moments to a two-dimensional aerosol transport and growth model.

Complex metal oxides, including ferroelectric, ferrimagnetic and superconducting ceramics, have a variety of technologically useful properties that can be exploited for a number of applications. Fabrication of complex metal oxide ceramics with specific properties requires high-purity powders with controlled chemical compositions, size distributions, and morphologies. Powders with these characteristics can be produced by aerosol processes in which fine particles are generated in gaseous flow systems. The particles can also be deposited from the gas phase onto surfaces to form films. This paper will discuss the use of aerosol processes for the generation of complex metal oxide powders. A review of aerosol processes will be presented first, followed by a discussion of the methods used for the generation of superconducting ceramic powders. Examples include the production of YBa,
