The heat recovery potential of ‘wastewater’: a national analysis of sewage effluent discharge temperatures

Abstract: Final sewage effluent (FSE) is typically warmer than the rivers it is often discharged to. The excess heat energy could be recovered and utilised to help meet climate change targets....

“…For larger amounts of wastewater, a heat pump application is necessary [11]. The lower source of energy for this device can be greywater [12], raw sewage transported by sewage collectors and flowing through the technological facilities of the sewage treatment plant [13,14], as well as treated sewage flowing towards the receiver [15]. Industrial wastewater can also be used as a heat source [16].…”

“…Especially given that summer water temperatures during low flow conditions exceeded 20 ; temperatures which can affect the recruitment success of salmonids such as brown trout, Salmo trutta , and European grayling, Thymallus thymallus 55 . Wastewater treatment works are a source of warm water that has received little attention to date, but a UK-national-scale analysis by 56 have shown that there is potential to recover heat from wastewater treatment works to help meet climate change targets, with the additional benefit of reducing environmental impacts on rivers. Our analysis indicates that a mitigation option such as heat recovery from treated effluent discharge may benefit chalk streams, such as the River Chess, which receive high proportions of their flow from treated effluent.…”

“…Вибір такого прикладу обумовлений тим, що каналізаційні стоки є найпотужнішим джерелом відновлювальної енергії в умовах мегаполісів. Наприклад, за оцінками до 6,1 % потреб Великобританії в теплі можна задовольнити шляхом рекуперації тепла стічних вод тільки в Англії [146].…”
