High-boiling-point water-miscible solvents such as polyethylene glycols are normally recommended along with a cross-linking agent for the pretreatment of cotton to make it suitable for transfer printing with disperse dyes. The role of such glycols has been stated as maintaining the swollen state of cotton, which allows the diffusion of disperse dyes during transfer printing. In the present work an attempt has been made to point out the exact role played by the high-boiling-point glycols during sublimation transfer printing of cotton with disperse dyes.
