The Ignition Behavior of a Ternary Mg–Sr–Ca Alloy

Abstract: In this work, a Mg-Sr-Ca alloy is evaluated for ignition resistance. The simultaneous use of Sr and Ca results in an ignition temperature increase of %110 C compared to pure Mg. This is attributed to the formation of a compact oxide scale due to the modification of the native MgO scale. A new parameter, the effective Pilling-Bedworth ratio (EPBR), which is the molar volume ratio between the oxide formed and the substrate alloy, is developed. The EPBR of the composite oxide forming on the Mg-Ca-Sr alloy is foun… Show more

“…Many investigations have focused on the development of ignition-proof magnesium alloys and protective atmospheres. According to recent research, Ca ( Inoue et al, 2017 ), CaO ( Lee 2016 ), Be ( Tan et al, 2018 ), Sr ( Villegas-Armenta and Pekguleryuz, 2020 ), and several rare Earth elements (Gd, Nd, Y, et.) ( Tan et al, 2019 ; Cai et al, 2021 ; Wu et al, 2021 ) may inhibit the ignition of magnesium alloys by forming a continuous protective oxide layer on the surface.…”
