The Impact of Sequential Fluorination of π‐Conjugated Polymers on Charge Generation in All‐Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract: The performance of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) is often limited by the poor exciton dissociation process. Here, the design of a series of polymer donors (P1-P3) with different numbers of fluorine atoms on their backbone is presented and the influence of fluorination on charge generation in all-PSCs is investigated. Sequential fluorination of the polymer backbones increases the dipole moment difference between the ground and excited states (Δµ ge ) from P1 (18.40 D) to P2 (25.11 D) and to P3 (28.47 D). “…As expected, the Voc (Figure 2a In terms of the obtained PCEs, blends with D-2F generally show the best performance, due to the higher fill factor (FF) and short-circuit current (J sc ) relative to blends with either D-0F or D-4F ( Figure S2). The improvement over D-0F may be partly due to the enhancement of dipole moments and possible improved morphology upon fluorination leading to better charge extraction [52][53] The fact that FF and Jsc are reduced for all D-4F:acceptor combinations, even for cases with a sufficiently high ΔE HOMO for efficient charge generation (IT-4F, [70]PCBM and C60:C70),…”

“…Many types of conjugated polymers have recently been designed and synthesized to obtain a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) in all‐polymer solar cells (All‐PSCs) owing to good film formation property and high mechanical stability for flexible devices . Through these efforts, All‐PSC has shown a high PCE of over 10%, but still has performance stability issues.…”
