“…Results have shown that a single acid rain treatment (pH 1.8) to P. vulgaris can reduce gas exchange, the maximum carboxylating efficiency and photochemical quenching (Velikova et al 1999). The results found in the present experiment agree with those reported in other studies, indicating that photosynthesis is generally unaffected by simulated acid rain (Shan et al 1996;Anderson et al 1997;Momen et al 1997). However, the threshold of acid rain injury varies to a considerable extent, depending on plant species (Velikova et al 1999).…”

“…Water use efficiency (WUE) is an important agronomic character that also decreased slightly at the highest OTC stress (Table 3). Combined with related assays showing that damage to plant tissues may reduce WUE (Shan et al 1996;Reich et al 1985) and the marked reduction in enzyme activities in the leaves (Table 2), it can be inferred that OTC might injure the functional tissues in the leaves. Leaf ultrastructure was observed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to demonstrate this assumption.…”

“…Several O 3 effects on roots have been reported, including the impact in their architecture (Vollsnes et al, 2010) and density (Hoshika et al, 2013b), their tips formation (Vollsnes et al, 2010), their monosaccharide and starch concentrations (Braun et al, 2004;Thomas et al, 2005), and their elongation rates (Vollsnes et al, 2010). An important variables often observed to be influenced by O 3 is the shoot:root ratio (Franzaring et al, 2000;Landolt et al, 2000;Samuelson, 1994;Sanz et al, 2005;Shan et al, 1995Shan et al, , 1996. Most of the reports suggest that roots are suppressed at a higher degree than shoots, which may consequently lead to their inability to support the aboveground parts.…”
