The Influence of Application Protocol of Simplified and Universal Adhesives on the Dentin Bonding Performance

Abstract: Contemporary adhesives use etch-and-rinse, self-etch, and multimode adhesive strategies. Simplified and universal adhesives present lower bond strength to dentin than conventional, two-bottle etch-and-rinse adhesives. The purpose of this study was to evaluate bonding performance of simplified and universal adhesives to dentin after modifying their application protocol (multiplying applications and extending application time). Adhesive layer thickness (ALT) and shear bond strength (SBS), as well as the correlat… Show more

“…The included studies mostly used universal adhesives in self-etching mode when placing bulk-fill resins. These adhesives are gaining popularity among clinicians, allowing for simplified procedures, however their dentin bonding potential can be enhanced by modifying the application method [ 49 , 50 ]. One study [ 21 ] using the self-etch adhesive Xeno III attributed the post-operative sensitivity to the adhesive used rather than to the bulk-fill resin material.…”

“…Interestingly, based on both proportional composition as well as the chemistry of these components dental adhesives may be divided into different generations [1,4]. Dental adhesives, that constitute a multifunctional systems, may be used as self-etch adhesives, etch-and-rinse adhesives or in a selective enamel etching technique [5][6][7][8][9]. They are commonly used for a wide range of clinical application, whereas a several important factors should be considered before selection of the bonding procedure and adhesive system for the vital dentine.…”

“…Moreover, by applying the adhesive with active rubbing motions, fresh monomers are constantly provided to enhance adhesive infiltration. Positive effects of altered application modes (active, prolonged or multiplied application) on the polymer-dentin bond strengths have been reported for universal adhesives in recent studies [8,24,25,30,39] and can be attributed to the better infiltration of monomers into decalcified dentin [8,38]. The fact that the low bond strengths of the group with halved acid etching time and halved adhesive application time (G2) could almost be raised to the level of the control group (G1) by 20 s of adhesive application time (G6) emphasizes the importance of strict adherence to the minimum recommended application time.…”

“…The extracted teeth were then cleaned [38] and stored in 0.5% chloramine-T solution [8,27,39]. In order to facilitate the subsequent use, the root tips were glued perpendicular to the center of a holder for scanning electron microscopes (Wenka, Karl Wenger SA, Courgenay, Switzerland) with superglue (Superglue No.…”
