The Influence of Cholangitis on the Prognosis of Extrahepatic Biliary Atresia

Abstract: The prognosis of extrahepatic biliary atresia (EHBA) depends first on the progression of the basically existing disease and second on the development of preoperative existing alterations of hepatic structure. In addition there are postoperative complications which have essential influence on the prognosis of the disease. In this context ascending cholangitis poses a very important problem for children who have undergone a portoenterostomy. Both the organism and the frequency of cholangitis may play a part. Thi… Show more

“…However, the antimicrobial property for Escherichia coli in hepcidin is meaningful, as E. coli is the most common bacterium involved in postoperative cholangitis in BA (25,26). Postoperative cholangitis is the most common complication following KP for BA, which exacerbates preexisting liver fibrosis (27), leading to end-stage liver cirrhosis necessitating liver transplant in the late stage of BA. Patients who receive liver transplantation for 665 salvage experience more episodes of infection in the hepatobiliary system than those who survive with their native liver (28).…”

“…Biliary atresia is generally considered an acquired condition with potential immunologic, inflammatory, infectious and abnormal developmental pathway contributing to the progressive destruction of the extra- and intrahepatic biliary tree leading to hepatic fibrosis. (39)…”
