SUMMARY: Fourteen intertidal sites from the eastern mid-region of the Tagus estuary were considered in order to study their macrobenthic assemblages in relation to environmental factors. The salinity gradient was displayed in an ordination of the assemblages by non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). However, salinity was not found to be a significant environmental factor to explain the distribution of the assemblages. Conversely, a lateral gradient characterized three clusters of sites identified in relation to their outer, intermediate and inner location also related to organic matter content, oxygen concentration and redox potential values. Although the hydrodynamic factor was not investigated it is thought to be an important environmental factor for characterizing the lateral gradient. As a general trend, there was a transition between the groups of assemblages from the lower estuary towards the inner and upstream locations. The polychaetes Lanice conchilega and Hediste diversicolor and the gastropod Hydrobia ulvae were the characteristic species in the outer, inner and intermediate groups of sites, respectively. It was concluded that the lateral gradient is the main environmental driver that explains the distribution of the intertidal macrobenthic assemblages in the Tagus estuary when the salinity gradient is not find to be a significant environmental factor.Keywords: community transition, salinity gradient, lateral gradient, static factors, indicative species, estuarine zones. RESUMEN: Distribución intermareal De las poblaciones De macroinvertebraDos en el estuario Del tajo, portugal, en relación con factores ambientales. -Se han estudiado las poblaciones de macroinvertebrados y su distribución en relación a varios factores ambientales en catorce estaciones de muestreo da la zona intermareal situadas en la región central, margen Este, del estuario del Río Tajo. El gradiente salino fue sobrepuesto sobre las poblaciones macrobentónicas tras aplicar un escalado multidimensional no métrico (NMDS). El análisis reveló que la salinidad no es un factor ambiental significativo en la distribución de las poblaciones macrobentónicas de la zona en estudio. En cambio, se identificó un gradiente lateral que caracterizó los grupos de estaciones de muestreo agrupadas según su localización exterior, interior e intermedia, igualmente relacionadas con los factores ambientales contenido de materia orgánica, concentración de oxígeno y potencial redox. Aunque no se ha medido el factor hidrodinámico, éste parece ser importante para la definición del gradiente lateral. Facultative feeding and consistency of trophic structure in marine soft-bottom macrobenthic communities

We investigated the roles of facultative versus strict niche feeding in the maintenance of trophic consistency in soft-bottom macrobenthic communities in the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia, Canada. Changes in trophic structure across gradients in depth and percent fine sediments were examined over a broad regional scale by identifying trophic compartment(s) responsible for the resulting trophic changes. The use of proportional organic biomass data allows direct comparison of community trophic structure across diverse hydrographic regime(s), large ranges in overall biomass and productivity, and highly variable community composition. Cluster analyses revealed low overall dissimilarity in trophic structure across all substrate and depth ranges (24 and 28% divergence, respectively), suggesting an overall economy of trophic function. Similarity percentage (SIMPER) analyses revealed that low trophic dissimilarity is driven primarily by the remarkably even distribution of the 2 dominant facultative feeding groups in all habitat types. These facultative groups contained the most ubiquitous and abundant taxa found throughout the Strait, and likely confer strong resilience in these communities to habitat change. In contrast, the small but significant divergences in trophic structure over depth and percent fine sediment gradients was explained by the distributions of strict niche feeders: (1) macro-omnivores and herbivores dependent on non-detrital food sources were important in shallow areas (< 25 m) with coarse sediments (<10% fine sediment), contributing to a unique trophic composition in these areas; and (2) subsurface deposit feeders were the only trophic group to vary significantly in proportional biomass explained by depth and percent fine sediment combined (22%; positive linear response to both factors).KEY WORDS: Deposit feeding · Suspension feeding · Strait of Georgia · Salish Sea · British Columbia · Facultative feeding · Trophic structure Resale or republication not permitted without written consent of the publisherMar Ecol Prog Ser 445: [129][130][131][132][133][134][135][136][137][138][139][140] 2012 2001). The trophic structure of benthic communities in the Tagus estuary and adjacent coastal shelf was characterized according to a functional guild approach, based on sampling surveys conducted between 1987 and 2000. Macrobenthic organisms were assigned to seven distinct trophic groups (herbivorous, filter feeders, surface deposit feeders, subsurface deposit feeders, carnivores, filter feeders/detritivores, carnivores/detritivores) and the dominance of these groups was related to environmental variables using multivariate ordination techniques. Surfacedeposit feeders were numerically dominant in the Tagus estuary, making up 52% of the benthic communities, while in the adjacent coastal shelf the assemblage was dominated by both surfacedeposit feeders and filter feeders (37% and 33%, respectively). When biomass was considered, filter feeders and filter feeders/detritivores were the dominant groups in the estuary, while for the adjacent coastal shelf filter feeders represented 83% of the total biomass. Salinity, depth and sediment composition were the main factors structuring spatial distribution. Surface-deposit feeders were the most abundant macrobenthos of the upper estuary. Surface deposit feeders also dominated the middle and the lower estuary but the proportion of filter feeders as well as other trophic groups increased with salinity. Generally, a more even distribution of trophic structure was found at stations with high salinity. In the adjacent coastal shelf, the trophic diversity decreased with depth. The trophic structure revealed that filter feeders dominated in abundance and biomass in shallow sandy sediments (<25 m), while in deeper sandy mud and muddy habitats (>50 m to 260 m), deposit feeders and carnivores were the most important groups in abundance and biomass, respectively.
