Summary The use of higher frequencies for satellite multimedia communication systems calls for research of the atmospheric propagation effects at these bands (rain, cloud and gaseous attenuation, scintillation, and depolarization). Alphasat was successfully launched on 25 July 2013. This largest and most powerful European telecommunication satellite carries, besides a commercial payload belonging to the mobile satellite communication provider Inmarsat, several Technology Demonstration Payloads (TDPs) from ESA. One of them is the Aldo Paraboni payload (TDP5) for Q/V‐band communication and Ka/Q‐band propagation experiments. These experiments explore future applications in satellite communication and measure how the Earth's atmosphere affects the propagation of electromagnetic waves. Under ESA contract, JOANNEUM RESEARCH designed, developed, and operates a Q/V‐band communication ground station and a Ka/Q‐band propagation terminal. The experimental site is equipped with ancillary equipment including a multifrequency radiometer profiler, a 2D video disdrometer (2DVD), and meteorological stations. This paper reports on the experimental setup, data processing, and obtained results.

Observation of Site Diversity Gain Dependency on Separation Distance Using an Attenuation-Dependent Logarithmic Model in a Tropical Region

⁞ABSTRACT Ensuring site diversity is a fade mitigation technique used to overcome severe rain-induced attenuation encountered in high-frequency signal communications, especially over tropical regions. However, due to the high cost of deploying diverse equipment and terrestrial infrastructures for connections between two sites, gain prediction models are widely used to evaluate the performance of a given scheme. This article presents a study on the behavior of four parameters that contribute to site diversity gain: site separation distance, link frequency, elevation angle, and baseline orientation angle. A correlation between gain and distance is found in the form of an attenuation-dependent logarithmic function instead of the gain being saturated when the increment of the distance exceeds the convective rain cell extent, as was found in the literature. Therefore, a site diversity logarithmic model, SDLog, is proposed. The analysis utilized seven site diversity experiments conducted in the tropics, i.e., in Malaysia, Singapore, and Guam, USA. The performance of the SDLog model was compared with the performances of existing models, namely, the ITU-R, Hodge, Panagopoulos, Semire, and X. Yeo models. The SDLog model reproduces the experimental datasets with an average root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.12, while those of the ITU-R, Hodge, Panagopoulos, Semire, and X. Yeo models are 0.226, 0.289, 0.19, 0.192, and 0.311, respectively. These models were also evaluated based on diversity experiments conducted in Indonesia, separate from the former evaluation. The RMSE and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of all evaluations are presented, and the SDLog model seems to be convincing.

Rain attenuation statistics for mobile satellite communications estimated from radar measurements in Malaysia

Mobile satellite communications will play a significant role in the next 5 th generation mobile services. The use of high-frequency bands will be the enabler of this advancement. However, at high frequencies, excess rain attenuation causes severe signal losses and presents a major threat for the system availability, especially in the tropical region. To that end, this study presents the rain attenuation impact on mobile satellite communications estimated using long-term radar measurements in Malaysia, by exploiting the horizontal structure of rain from the radar database and simulating inner-city and highway mobile terminals scenarios. Additionally, a scaling factor was presented to scale available fixed satellite terminals measurements to mobile terminals operating at the same locality under similar conditions. In comparison to the available link measurements, the radar database was reliable enough to provide highly accurate estimates. In all simulation scenarios, the mobile terminal will depart the rainy area soon enough and experience lower attenuation statistics in comparison with the fixed terminal. The provided results will help determine the overall future system performance, especially in tropical regions.
