The LHAASO experiment: From Gamma-Ray Astronomy to Cosmic Rays

Abstract: LHAASO is expected to be the most sensitive project to face the open problems in Galactic cosmic ray physics through a combined study of photon-and charged particle-induced extensive air showers in the energy range 10 11 -10 17 eV. This new generation multi-component experiment will be able of continuously surveying the gamma-ray sky for steady and transient sources from about 100 GeV to PeV energies, thus opening for the first time the 10 2 -10 3 TeV range to the direct observations of the high energy cosmic … Show more

“…An important objective of new experiments like LHAASO [392] or the the extension of Ice-Top [393] is the measurement of the mass composition in the knee region and above. In particular, the resolution of the position of the proton knee-which is at present discrepant between different experiments-is from a theoretical point crucial in pinning down the maximal energy and the possible need for an additional population of Galactic CR sources.…”

“…This very challenging task is currently pursued by the HAWC observatory. 292,293 In the future, theČerenkov Telescope Array (CTA) 294 -currently under construction -and forthcoming air shower arrays such as LHAASO 295 and possibly a Southern Hemisphere extension to HAWC, will provide a very significant increase in sentitivity and angular resolution in the multi-TeV regime. CTA in particular has the opportunity to focus on the emission from large individual clouds in the Galactic ridge and across the whole Galactic plane.…”

“…Or in the case when these observatories are used to perform measurement of the hadronic cosmic rays (for example [12]). Finally, hadron simulations are required to estimate the sensitivity of future gamma-ray observatories, such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) [13], the Southern Gamma-ray Survey Observatory (SGSO) [14], and the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) [15] which could be affected by the choice of models. The advent of LHC measurements has provided large amounts of data at never before probed energies [16] and at extreme rapidities [17,18].…”
