The Management Challenges in an Unusual Case of Primary Osteosarcoma of the Rib in an Adult Patient

Abstract: Primary osteosarcomas are derived from primitive bone-forming mesenchymal stem cells and most often originate in the metaphysis of the long bones of children and adolescents, but it occurs very rare in adults. Approximately 10% of osteosarcomas are located in the flat bones, pelvis being the main site. Involvement of flat bones like rib may be seen as a metastatic process or secondary to chemotherapy, but a primary osteosarcoma rib is extremely rare. Osteosarcoma originating from such rare sites poses numerous… Show more

“…C-myc expression was significantly higher in cells transfected with pcDNA3.1-c-myc than those transfected with empty vector (pcDNA3.1) ( Ã p < .05 represented the significant difference between the compared two). [22]. Cure rate is < 65% for localized osteosarcoma patients, while cases showing metastasis when diagnosed frequently experience poorer prognosis [23].…”

“…In our literature review, the largest reported POSR was 20 × 15 cm requiring resection of ribs 5, 6, and 7, which was reconstructed with a latissimus flap [17]. Lim et al resected a 9 × 13 cm mass with five contiguous ribs (ribs 3–7) and reconstruction with titanium mesh [18].…”

“…Osteosarcoma is one of the most frequent bone sarcomas occurring primarily in metaphysis of long bones. 1,2 The most age group affected in adolescence though it rarely might occur in adults. Osteosarcoma less frequently affects the flat bones of the body, of which pelvic bones are most commonly affected.…”
