The march of progress: structures of the adducts of potassium dicyanidoaurate(I) with 2,2′-bipyridyl (redetermination) and 1,10-phenanthroline

Abstract: The structure of the 2,2′-bipyridyl adduct poly[(μ2-2,2′-bipyridyl-κ3 N,N′:N)di-μ3-cyanido-κ6 C:N:N-gold(I)potassium(I)], [AuK(CN)2(C10H8N2)] n , (1) (space group P21), has been redetermined [previous determination: Jones et al. (1980). Acta Cryst. B36, 160–162]. The bipyridyl ligands coordinate only the potassium ion, which has a coordination sphere consisting of seven N-atom donors; gold(I) remains in the form of linear dicyanidoaurat… Show more

“…The first gold bpy complex to be claimed was {KAu(bpy)(CN) 2 }, which was obtained from the reaction of K[Au(CN) 2 ] with bpy and reported to contain a square-planar [Au(bpy)(CN) 2 ] – ion, on the basis of X-ray crystallographic data showing a very short (3.74 Å) b -axis [252]. Some 40 years later, the crystal structure of the compound was determined and it was shown to contain linear [Au(CN) 2 ] – anions; the bpy was not coordinated to the gold but adopts a cisoid conformation and interacts with the potassium cations at 2.778 and 3.080 Å (Figure 26a) [253,254]. In view of the current interest in organogold compounds in organic synthesis, it is appropriate that one of the first gold complexes containing a bpy ligand should be an organometallic compound [255].…”

“…Most of them represent complexes of late transition metals, with a sole example of the p -block element found in [In 3 (bipy) 5 ] 3+ . Also, for the μ-κ 1 N :κ 2 N , N ′-bridging coordination mode, only one example is known, namely, polymeric [K(bipy)Au(CN) 2 ] n . There the bipy molecules are coordinated to K + ions in a μ-κ 1 N :κ 2 N , N ′-mode, forming infinite chains (Figure S3).…”

“…Отдельно стоит привести комплексы K(L)[Au(CN) 2 ] (L = bipy, phen) [162], Интересные N-донорные лиганды с комбинированной хелатно-мостиковой донорной функцией были также описаны в работах [166,167]. Общая схема синтеза дицианоауратных комплексов с ними представлена ниже.…”
