The Metaverse and Beyond: Implementing Advanced Multiverse Realms With Smart Wearables

Abstract: With the online-everything transformation accelerated by a global Covid-19 pandemic, we may finally find ourselves on the verge of the next potentially paradigm-shifting step after the mobile Internet: The Metaverse. Among others, the Metaverse will utilize head-mounted devices (HMDs) and extended reality (XR), including but not limited to virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), as the medium to connect avatars and users in the real world. In addition, the Metaverse is supposed to provide gamified experiences a… Show more

“…Through TI technologies and the more recent vision of digitalized immersive 3D realms known as Metaverse (e.g., Al-Ghaili et al, 2022;Mystakidis, 2022;Rostami and Maier, 2022), the embodiments of human perceptual and cognitive processes would frequently be interacting with digitalized multisensory signals including haptics. Such "digital embodiments" raise challenges for digitalizing sensory signals in ways that preserve key stimulus characteristics for humans to sense and perceive, while not overburdening the latency and capacity requirements on the telecommunication networks that transmit these signals (e.g., Steinbach et al, 2018;Noll et al, 2022).…”

“…HMDs are widely considered the default hardware equipment to experience metaverse applications. HMD is a convenient replacement for the conventional smartphone in terms of visual experience, which brings the smartphone UI right in front of our eyes [2]. There are three types of HMDs that can be used in DWS depending on the target application, namely, nonsee-through (NST-HMD), optical see-through (OST-HMD) and video see-through (VST-HMD) [1].…”

“…HMDs open a wide scope of applications, which allow users to experience an immersive full size view of the scenery, which has been previously hidden behind the small flat screen of the conventional smartphone. In addition, the extended reality (XR) based on AR and VR solutions allows one to merge physical and virtual worlds and interact with physical and virtual things altogether [2].…”

“…Various use cases for Beyond 5G and 6G have been proposed and studied, such as autonomous driving [1], [2], holographic communication [3], extended reality (XR) [4], [5], and so on. Requirements for realizing these use cases are being discussed by many organizations [6]- [9].…”
