The Microbiology of Secondary and Postoperative Pancreatic Infections

Abstract: We reviewed our experience with secondary pancreatic infections with a focus on preemptive intervention and the potential alteration of the recovered microbial flora. The pathogens associated with postoperative pancreatic infections were analyzed with respect to nonenteric organisms, if any, that were recovered. We hypothesized that our findings might alter the antimicrobial management of these patients.

“…Fungal infections comprised nearly 14% of all infections. This is alarming because an association of fungal infections with mortality has been reported in up to 20% of cases [29]. The highest rate of antibiotic resistance was found for S. aureus (MRSA 29.4%) and P. aeruginosa (23.5%).…”

“…A subset analysis, focusing on Candida albicans-positive cultures, revealed an even greater incidence of death (66.7 vs. 31.0 %, P=0.060)-this was also observed in a recent study. 28 Another notable point regarding mortality is that 55 % of grade C POPF-related mortalities took place greater than 30 days after the operation; therefore, it is vital to report the occurrence and severity of all complications up until 90 days from the index operation.…”
