The miRNA: a small but powerful RNA for COVID-19

Abstract: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a severe and rapidly evolving epidemic. Now, although a few drugs and vaccines have been proved for its treatment and prevention, little systematic comments are made to explain its susceptibility to humans. A few scattered studies used bioinformatics methods to explore the role of microRNA (miRNA) in COVID-19 infection. Combining these timely reports and previous studies about virus and miRNA, we comb … Show more

“…MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that primarily act in post-transcriptional processes and bind hundreds of sites in the transcriptome through targeting the 3′ untranslational regions (3′UTR), 5′UTR, and coding regions of specific mRNAs or embedding within a particular gene [ 1 , 2 ]. These RNA molecules have been implicated in a variety of pathological disorders including cancers, different organ dysfunctions, and infectious diseases [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ].…”

“…The hsa-miR-17-5p was identified as another significant miRNA in our research. TNF expression in leukaemia cells is inhibited by hsa-miR-17, which binds to TNF's 3′-UTR [ 63 , 64 ]. During the IV infection, has-miR-17-3p was found in human alveolar basal epithelial cells (HBEpC) [ 64 ].…”

“…During the IV infection, has-miR-17-3p was found in human alveolar basal epithelial cells (HBEpC) [ 64 ]. has-miR-98-5p was discovered as a promising candidate, and it was mechanistically validated as a regulator of TMPRSS2 transcription in two human endothelial cell types derived from the lung and the umbilical vein [ 63 , 64 ]. IL6 stimulates inflammatory reactions in mucosa during COVID infection [ 65 ].…”

“…It is important to know the profile of miRNAs in COVID-19 because it can be useful in diagnosis and prognosis. In addition, new molecular drugs can be designed by miRNA profile [ 22 ].…”
