The miscibility estimation of some nanocomposites based on starch

Abstract: Based on the FTIR spectral changes, the miscibility of some nanocomposites based on starch, polyvinyl alcohol and treated multilayered silicate, was qualitatively estimated. The FTIR spectroscopy provide evident gross/small spectral changes as well as appreciable spectral shifts mainly in those spectral range that defines hydroxyl O-H vibrations (3600-3000 cm -1 ), water absorbtion (1800 -1500 cm -1 ) , the morphological order degree and the interaction with multilayered silicate and (1192 -950 cm -1 ). Based … Show more

“…Even the blends of starch with polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) have been extensively studied [12][13][14][15]; their importance is however alive, mainly because they can be designed for applications which require particular properties. The degradability of starch [16][17][18][19][20][21][22] and PVOH [23][24][25][26][27][28] has been also broadly studied.…”

“…The authors have observed that, during melt processing, the starch-PVOH blends degrade by visually changing of color, from natural to yellow, beige, or brown shades [12][13][14][15]. The degradation can occur in the first 2-4 min after the solid and liquid components, premixed in advance, are added into the mixing chamber of Brabender plastograph or almost immediately after the polymers plasticizing, even if additional plasticizers were used [12][13][14].…”

“…will appear. The new compounds always will contain, near unmelted particles because of their size, rests from the starch grains, represented by the clustered amylopectin macromolecules which cannot be intimately compounded with linear macromolecules of PVOH or amylose [28]. Otherwise these rests are very well visible on the SEM micrographs (figs.…”

“…Several known studies regarding the starch -PVOH compounds refer to issues as: acquiring methods [11,12], plasticizer types [15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22], parameters influencing functional properties [10,11,13,14], other polymeric modifiers [23,24], nano-composites [25], compatibility [26,28], cross-linking [26,27], starch phase transition [29][30][31][32][33][34]. However, about the possibilities to control both the defects and the undesired color change of starch based materials at melt compounding, only general data, in the best case, are known [35].…”

“…According to the above-presented FTIR, the spectra of the mechanically recycled compounds showed changes, but not in terms of the appearance of new peaks or the disappearance of others and/or peak translations, which if they existed would prove deep structural changes of a chemical nature [ 30 ].The changes that occurred in these spectra were mainly related either to an intensification of the absorption of all the characteristic peaks, as in the PM2 and PM3 compounds, or a decrease in these absorptions, as inthe PM3 blend. This type of transformation is related to the mobility of the macromolecular chains, which is associated with the length of the macromolecular chains.…”
