The Mite Genus Histiogaster (Acari: Acaridae) in the Eastern Palaearctic, With a Description of Two New Species and Report of Pre-Copulatory Guarding

Abstract: Two new species of the mite genus Histiogaster—H. litoralis sp. n. and H. tareevi sp. n.—are described from Eastern Russia based on males and females. Histiogaster ornata are redescribed based on males, females and heteromorphic deutonymphs. For H. litoralis, pre-copulatory guarding of tritonymphs is reported based on observations in a laboratory culture. This contrasts with the mites from the H. arborsignis species group which lacking this behavior. An annotated checklist and a key to the species of Histiogas… Show more

“…The Grandjean's organ of S. alfalfa is simple, flattened, weakly curved. Additionally, several species in the genus Sancassania were recorded in Korea including S. rodionovi (= S. berlesei ) (Lee et al 1980), S. phyllophagianus (Ree et al 1997), and S. sphaerogaster (Klimov & Tolstikov 2011). Klimov & OConnor (2003) described and illustrated seven Sancassania species.…”

“…Most notogastral setae are curved in the majority of species and smooth, but in E. cornuta (Wang & Norton, 1995) and E. sasakawai (Enami, 1989) they are flattened and smooth. In E. flammeisetosa (Tolstikov, 1995) they are flattened and barbed while in E. sarvari (Tolstikov 1995) these setae are thin, smooth, relatively short, and appear to be pliable. The Eubelba species compared in Table 4 differ also from one another by the length of some setae ( in , c 1 , p 1 ), presence of apophysis Bp and E2 , and length of leg IV.…”

“…Among the adults of Eubelba species, the shape of all leg segments, setae and solenidia is known in E. flammeisetosa (Tolstikov, 1995), E. heterosetosa (Bayartogtokh, 2004), E. prasadi (Bayartogtokh, 2000), and E. sculpta, investigated by Tolstikov (1995), Bayartogtokh (2004), Bayartogtokh (2000), and Lamos (2019) respectively. The legs of E. danubedeltaica most resemble those of E. prasadi which also have many long setae, curved in apical part, and which are most clearly observed on leg IV.…”
