The MJO and Convectively Coupled Waves in a Coarse-Resolution GCM with a Simple Multicloud Parameterization

Abstract: The adequate representation of the dominant intraseasonal and synoptic-scale variability in the tropics, characterized by the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) and convectively coupled waves, is still problematic in current operational general circulation models (GCMs). Here results are presented using the next-generation NCAR GCM-the High-Order Methods Modeling Environment (HOMME)-as a dry dynamical core at a coarse resolution of about 167 km, coupled to a simple multicloud parameterization. The coupling is per… Show more

“…Both the deterministic and stochastic multicloud models dramatically improve the representation of the coherent and intermittent nature of organized convection. This has been shown in an idealized two baroclinic mode framework coupled to a coarse resolution GCM for both the MJO and monsoon intraseasonal oscillations (Khouider et al, 2011;Deng et al, 2015;Ajayamohan et al, 2013Ajayamohan et al, , 2014.…”

“…This new variability has a subtle effect on the mean state and precipitation statistics and has a great potential for interaction with other low frequency phenomena. These schemes can readily be implemented in deterministic and stochastic multicloud model GCM simulations (Khouider et al, 2011(Khouider et al, , 2011Deng et al, 2015;Ajayamohan et al, 2013Ajayamohan et al, , 2014, which already capture essential low frequency features, such as the MJO. “…Insight has been gained from the study of MJOlike waves in multicloud model simulations and in superparametrization computer simulations, which appear to capture many of the observed features of the MJO by accounting for coherent smaller-scale convective structures within the MJO envelope (e.g. Grabowski and Moncrieff 2004;Majda et al 2007;Khouider et al 2011;Ajayamohan et al 2013). Suitable stochastic parametrizations also appear to be good canditates to account for irregular and intermittent organized small scale moist processes while remaining computationally efficient (Majda et al 2008;Khouider et al 2010;Stechmann and Neelin 2011;Frenkel et al 2012).…”

“…It is characterised by a strong interaction between tropical convection and the large-scale environment, manifest as a coherent eastward propagating pattern of precipita- tion followed by subsequent rainfall suppression (Khouider et al, 2011;Zhang et al, 2013;Kim et al, 2014;Raymond et al, 2015). It is a challenge for the current generation of global climate and weather models to represent the dynamics and thermodynamics of the MJO realistically (Slingo et al, 1996;Lin et al, 2006;Kim et al, 2009;Sperber et al, 2011;Klingaman et al, 2015).…”
