The modulation effect of an electron-rich guest on the luminescence of naphthalene diimide-based metal–organic frameworks

Abstract: A series of host–guest MOF materials were successfully fabricated by virtue of donor–acceptor interactions, which exhibit color-tunable emissions in a wide wavelength range by rational selection of guest molecules.

“…In the past decades, MOFs with guest-dependent character have been explored in chemical sensing, molecular recognition, photochromism, and so forth. Typically, luminescent, catalytic, photochromic guests, etc., are usually adopted to construct such MOFs. However, examples of constructing functional host–guest complexes by assembling nonfunctional solvent molecules into a MOF host are relatively few.…”

“…Pyrene and naphthalene have been recognized as representative electron-rich polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which possess extensive π-electron delocalization. 42,43 In contrast, NDI-based macrocycle [Au-1]BF 4 is an excellent electron acceptor that features electron-withdrawing imide groups on planar aromatic naphthalene and has a strong tendency to interact with electron donors. When pyrene was added to a DMF solution of [Au-1]BF 4 , a noticeable color change of the mixture from yellow to red was observed.…”

“…More importantly, the change of the frameworks affords a strong possibility for the generation of diversified interfacial contacts of EDs/EAs and subsequent distinguishing intermolecular electronic behaviors. [55][56][57][58][59] Therefore, the combination of flexible electrondeficient NDI with different electron-rich auxiliary ligands is an effective strategy for modulating the interfacial relationship of EDs/EAs as well as providing a great chance to ascertain the influence mechanism of ICT on PIET.…”
