Enhancing energy-environmental efficiency (EEE) is crucial for achieving energy conservation and emission reduction goals. Investigating the mechanism through which green technology innovation (GTI) affects EEE and understanding the role of environmental regulation (ER) in this process provides a theoretical basis for efficient utilization of GTI and ER. This study employs a Dynamic Spatial Durbin Model and utilizes panel data from 2003 to 2017 for 30 Chinese provinces to examine the impact of GTI on EEE in the presence of ER. The empirical results reveal: (1) GTI has a U-shaped impact on EEE, primarily driven by SubGI. (2) GTI’s influence on EEE is predominantly reflected in PTE, also stemming from SubGI. (3) The interaction term between ER and GTI is 0.0022, while the GTI coefficient is − 0.0741, and the GTI quadratic term coefficient is 0.0007, all statistically significant. This implies that ER mitigates the negative impact of GTI on EEE while strengthening its positive effect. These findings provide empirical evidence and policy insights for more effectively utilizing GTI and ER to enhance EEE and achieve energy conservation and emissions reduction goals.

The debate on the possibility of economic growth improving the quality of the environment has yet to reach a consensus. To contribute to this debate, we investigate the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis for oil-producing countries in Africa based on annual data from 1991 to 2019. We also examine the causal relationship between environmental quality and economic growth. The panel autoregressive distribution lag (PARDL) technique and the Granger non-causality test were employed. The findings show evidence of an inverted U-shaped relationship between economic growth and environmental quality in the long run, indicating the validity of the EKC hypothesis. It was also observed that energy prices exert strong, deteriorating effects on the environment in the short run. In the long run, renewable energy consumption and energy prices significantly improve the quality of the environment. The Granger causality test results demonstrate a unidirectional causality from environmental quality to economic growth. It was concluded that policies aimed at improving environmental quality in these countries could be beneficial in the short run. In the long run, these policies will prove beneficial only when economic growth is at a level where the quality of the environment is declining, since economic growth improves environmental quality.

This study aims to fill a crucial gap in current research by examining the multifaceted relationships between energy depletion, technical cooperation grants, industrialization, and environmental degradation. By focusing on Pakistan, a country emblematic of many developing nations facing rapid industrialization and resource constraints, this research offers valuable insights with broad applicability. The significance of this study lies in its innovative approach of utilizing load capacity factor as a novel proxy for environmental sustainability, moving beyond traditional metrics like CO2 emissions and ecological footprints. The study analyzes time series data from 1970 to 2022 using advanced econometric techniques, particularly the dynamic autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model. The findings reveal a nuanced picture of the impact of energy depletion, technical cooperation grants, and industrialization on environmental degradation. Energy depletion and industrialization are found to exert a significant and adverse influence on environmental quality, exacerbating degradation over time. Conversely, technical cooperation grants emerge as a mitigating factor, demonstrating a positive association with environmental sustainability. Moreover, the study conducts a sensitivity analysis by comparing the results obtained using the load capacity factor with those derived from ecological footprints. This comparative analysis offers robust insights into the dynamics of environmental degradation, enriching the understanding of the complex interplay between economic activities and environmental outcomes. Further, policies are discussed for theory and practice.
