Lithium salts have been used to treat psychiatric disorders since the 1940s and are currently used in prophylaxis and treatment of depression and bipolar disorder. Therefore, we conducted this study to assess lithium toxicity-related publications using bibliometric approaches from a health point of view to assess global research trends in the lithium toxicity field to offer guidance to future research in this field. The data were retrieved from the online version of Scopus database on 6 August 2016. All records with the term 'lithium' in the title were retrieved, and those related to lithium toxicity were evaluated. There were a total of 1241 publications related to lithium toxicity published from 1913 to 2016. Articles (971 or 78.2%) were the most common type, followed by letters (179 or 14.4%) and reviews (61 or 4.9%). The annual publication of articles increased slightly after 1950 and the total number of publications related to lithium toxicity fluctuated with three peaks occurred in 1978, 1985 and 2014. The USA was the predominant country (25.38%), followed by the UK (7.82%), France (6.85%) and Canada (3.55%). Denmark had the highest productivity of publication after standardization by gross domestic product and population size. The average number of citations per article was 9.24, and the h-index for all publications in the field of lithium toxicity was 46. The highest h-index value was achieved by the USA (31) followed by the UK (21) and Canada (13). The Lancet was the highest ranked journal with 27 articles, followed by American Journal of Psychiatry with 23 articles. This study provides a bibliometric analysis on the global research trends in lithium toxicity studies during 1913-2015. There has been a progressive increase in the number of publications related to lithium toxicity published in the last decade, and most of the studies related to lithium toxicity arose from the USA and the UK.

The Top-100 Highly Cited Original Articles on Drug Therapy for Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia

Background: In recent decades, research on drug therapy for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) remains one of the major hot-spots in the field of critical care medicine, but relevant data are not satisfactory. Our aim was to assess the status and trends of the most cited articles on drug therapy for VAP through bibliometric approaches. Methods: The Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science core collection database was searched for the VAP-related articles. The time period for retrieval was from the beginning of the database to September 30, 2018. The top 100 most cited articles were selected to obtain their information on the authors, title, publication, number of citations, author’s affiliations, country, etc. These general information and bibliometric data were collected for analysis. VOSviewer software was used to generate a term co-occurrence graph that visualized a reference pattern for different terms in the 100 articles. Results: The number of citations for the 100 selected articles ranged from 142 to 3,218. These articles were published in 31 different journals. The top three journals in terms of the number of our selected articles they published were “ Critical Care Medicine ” (17 articles), “ American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine ” (11 articles) and “ Clinical Infectious Diseases ” (10 articles). The most frequently nominated author was Marin H. Kollef from the University of Washington, and of the top 100 articles, 16 listed his name. These top 100 articles were published after the year of 2000. The most common type of article in the top 100 was an original article (53%). The United States and France were the countries that contributed the most articles to the top 100. Gram-negative bacilli, pseudomonas aeruginosa, antibiotics, risk factors and other terms appeared more frequently, suggesting that attentions on this issue currently focused on the rational application and management of antibiotics. Conclusion: This study analyzed the 100 most cited articles on drug-treated VAP, and provided insights into the historical developments and characteristics of the most cited articles in the field of VAP.

Objective. To analyze the development of cardio-oncology, summarize the research achievements, and provide proposals for its future research. Methods. The web of science database was used to search for “cardio-oncology” and “oncocardiology” related articles from the beginning of the database (1970) to April 5, 2019. Excel 2016 and Cytoscape were used to analyze the trend of cardio-oncology research. Results. A total of 356 articles were obtained. The number of articles has grown rapidly in recent years. Cardiac injury caused by tumor therapy was a research hotspot (n = 107). Researchers paid more attention to the prevention and treatment of cardiotoxicity (n = 54). Experimental researches were a small part of all studies (n = 72), mainly focusing on the study of cancer drugs’ cardiac injury, test indicators of cardiotoxicity, and preventive drugs. The United States (n = 156.25), Italy (n = 48.5), and Canada (n = 23.5) published the most articles, making a great contribution to the development of cardio-oncology. Conclusions. Cardio-oncology has been developing rapidly and receiving a large amount of research efforts in recent years. Most articles on cardio-oncology were published by the authors from the United States (44%) and Italy (17%), while other countries need to pay more attention to cardio-oncology. As an independent discipline, cardio-oncology is certainly in need of significant progress, but it has formed a basic framework, which has obtained many leading theories and meaningful achievements in diagnostic criteria, diagnostic methods, prevention and treatment, mechanism research, and influencing factor. Cardiac injury of tumor drugs has always been a research hotspot in this discipline, and there is still a lot of research space. The research about detection methods of cardiotoxicity and preventive drugs is gradually increasing. Basic research lags behind, and many mechanisms are still unclear.
