The Moyer Reading Technique Re-Evaluated

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to design treatment programmes for various types of reading disorder in such a way as to allow a valid evaluation of their efficacy, i.e. in a way which allows specific treatment effects to be distinguished from non-specific treatment effects (e.g., the effects of attention from a helpful person), and from changes unrelated to treatment (e.g. spontaneous recovery). In particular, the intention was to investigate whether specific forms of therapeutic intervention help specific forms… Show more

“…Some LBL readers use a phonological strategy to decode the input from their LBL reading, resulting in a surface alexia profile [45]. Phonological and deep alexia also have been documented in some LBL readers indicating additional damage to phonological procedures [11,18,31]. By definition, pure alexia has been characterized as an acquired reading impairment in the absence of significant writing impairment; however, LBL may also be accompanied by spelling impairment [17,22,37].…”

“…While Moyer [30] reported overt LBL reading by her subject at initial evaluation, she did not report on the presence or absence of a word length effect following treatment. Improved text reading rate with MOR treatment has been documented for other pure alexic patients with LBL reading [5,31,41], as well as alexic…”

“…Therefore, the present experiment provides further evidence for the efficacy of model-based treatment of oral reading and naming skills. Slow and laborious reading, a major characteristic of pure alexia, can be treated successfully by employing the Multiple Oral Rereading (MOR) method (Moyer, 1979;Moody, 1988;Tuomainen & Laine, 1991. Interestingly, in some patients, single word recognition as such does not improve but words are recognized faster only in relevant context (Tuomainen & Laine, 1993).…”

“…It has been shown to increase the reading speed of the practiced passage and, more importantly, to generalize to novel text (e.g., Moody, 1988; Beeson & Insalaco, 1998; Beeson, Magloire & Robey, 2005). In the original 1979 study using the MOR technique (Moyer, 1979) the patient read a passage aloud for 30 minutes a day for one week.…”
