The Multidimensional Forced-Choice Format as an Alternative for Rating Scales

Abstract: When constructing a questionnaire to assess a psychological construct, one important decision researchers have to make is how to collect responses from test takers; that is, which response format to implement. We argued in a 1 The multidimensional forced-choice format is both an item and a response format. For simplicity in the comparison with rating scales, we refer to it as response format.

“…The precision of trait estimates has been thoroughly pointed out as a main weakness in the use of FCQs (Brown & Maydeu-Olivares, 2011;Kreitchmann et al, 2019;Meade, 2004;Wetzel et al, 2020). Accordingly, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the assembly of pairwise FCQs on the recovery of trait estimates, presenting an efficient automated optimization procedure.…”

“…Some advantages of the proposed fuzzy IRT-map are as follows. First, since the procedure does not require a dedicated measurement setting, it is applicable over a wide range of survey situations including different rating formats (e.g., Likert-type, forced-choice, funnel response-format) [73,99].…”

“…In relation to cross‐cultural settings, Wetzel et al (2020) claimed the feasibility of forced‐choice format as an alternative to Likert‐scale formats in their preliminary conclusions. However, the benefit of using forced‐choice formats for cross‐cultural selection settings is not yet clear because there is a lack of scholarly evidence on the performance of forced‐choice formats with respect to faking occurring in different cultures.…”
