With the continuous development of large-scale engineering projects such as construction projects, relief support, and large-scale relocation in various countries, engineering logistics has attracted much attention. This paper addresses a multimodal material route planning problem (MMRPP), which considers the transportation of engineering material from suppliers to the work zones using multiple transport modes. Due to the overall relevance and technical complexity of engineering logistics, we introduce the key processes at work zones to generate a transport solution, which is more realistic for various real-life applications. We propose a multi-objective multimodal transport route planning model that minimizes the total transport cost and the total transport time. The model by using the ε − constraint method that transforms the objective function of minimizing total transportation cost into a constraint, resulting in obtaining pareto optimal solutions. This method makes up for the lack of existing research on the combination of both engineering logistics and multimodal transportation, after which the feasibility of the model and algorithm is verified by examples. The results show that the model solution with the introduction of the key processes at work zones produces more time-efficient and less time-consuming route planning results, and that the results obtained using the ε − constraint method are more reliable than the traditional methods for solving multi-objective planning problems and are more in line with the decision maker’s needs.

This research is a case study on the United Arab Emirates (UAE), exploring multimodal logistics, which involves transporting cargo using multiple modes of transportation, and investigating its challenges and opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022. Through a mixed-method approach of qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys, this study examines factors influencing multimodal cargo transport and its performance. Five senior executives from the logistics industry were interviewed to identify key variables, and a questionnaire was administered to 120 participants to assess the impact on shipping costs and utilization. This study reveals a significant relationship between geographical and geopolitical risks and increased shipping costs in certain regions, highlighting the need for secure and cost-effective multimodal solutions in these areas. However, shipping costs did not mediate the performance of intermodal transportation at transit hubs during the pandemic. The findings offer valuable insights for transit hubs to enhance the utilization of multimodal cargo transport during uncertain times, ultimately leading to improved logistics performance in similar hub countries. This study’s originality lies in its investigation of the resilience and sustainability dimensions in multimodal logistics during the pandemic, proposing mitigation strategies and enhancing strategic decision making in the logistics industry under volatile business environments. Future research is recommended to expand the model’s results by including data from other logistics corridors and hubs.

The recent renewable energy infrastructure development trend and modular construction concept surge academic interest in the project logistics sector. The project logistics is the transportation processes for oversized cargo, critical and high value, that belong to infrastructures projects; that require specialised stowage, lifting and transporting loaded and discharged at different ports. This study aims to introduce project logistics to the public sector. The author uses the descriptive review to elaborate on the niche problem of project cargo transportation. The flow of project cargo operation from the fabrication yard to the final installation site is discussed in this paper. Planning of project cargo logistics requires an integrated planning approach that considers the following aspects total delivery cost management, end-to-end visibility, transport routing management, variability management, integrated international and domestic workflow, and technical safety consideration. The decision-making for fleet selection should be based on the optimum scenario evaluating the damage’s total logistics cost, delivery time, risks and consequences. This study can be a guide to accommodate multidiscipline studies that consider commercial, technical, and safety aspects of project logistics.
