The National Geospatial Digital Archive: A Collaborative Project to Archive Geospatial Data

Abstract: OATAO is an open access repository that collects the work of Toulouse researchers and makes it freely available over the web where possible. This is an author-deposited version published in : http://oatao.univ-toulouse.fr/ Eprints ID : 18809 The contribution was presented at EKAW 2016 : Abstract. We propose an approach to semantically enrich metadata records of satellite imagery with external data. As a result we are able the identify relevant images using a larger set of matching criteria. “…One major undertaking in this area was the National Geospatial Digital Archive (NGDA) ix , funded by the Library of Congress. The goal of the NGDA was to collect, preserve, and provide long-term access to at-risk geospatial data (Erwin and Sweetkind-Singer 2009). This collaborative project between the University of California, Santa Barbara and Stanford University took a comprehensive view of long term geospatial data access and preservation.…”

“…Spatial data is from its nature eminently fuzzy and have characteristics which differentiate them from other data such as heterogeneity, volume, the need to be updated over time etc (Janee, 2009;Erwin & Sweetkind-Singer, 2010). Libraries as the main organizations for collecting, managing and disseminating information, in response to the growing needs of their users, collect geographic information and develop GIS services.…”

“…Amazon Web Services are widely used, and they have many different pricing models. However, multiple files associated with each data set present challenges from the end users perspective because they tend to be fairly complex and the relationship between the files needs to be maintained (Erwin and Sweetkind-Singer 2009). There are resources available to track past and present file formats that can be useful for legacy and modern data sets (Hoebelheinrich 2012).…”
