The National Marrow Donor Program’s Symposium on Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation in 2020: A Health Care Resource and Infrastructure Assessment

Abstract: Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is the only known curative therapy for many patients with life-threatening hematologic and oncologic diseases. It is estimated that the National Marrow Donor Program(®) (NMDP) will facilitate 10,000 transplants by 2015, double the current number. To better understand the existing personnel and center infrastructure for HCT in the country and to address system capacity challenges to the future growth of HCT, the NMDP convened a diverse group of stakeholders and thought l… Show more

“…The NMDP contains typing information on more than 4 million potential donors and can search international registries as well. Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide (BMDW) is a collective database of 59 registries in 43 countries and 37 cord blood registries from 21 countries; 11,386,999 potential donors and cord units were available as of July 2007 [37][38][39][40].…”

“…For many patients facing life-threatening oncologic and hematologic diseases, HCT is the only known curative therapy. 1 Improvements in transplant outcomes because of better supportive care measures and better donor availability has allowed the use of HCT in a greater number of patients, resulting in steady increases in recent decades in the United States and worldwide; 2 each year in the United States, roughly 20 000 patients receive HCT 3 and continued growth is expected in the future. 4 Owing to the specialized nature of HCT, facilities that provide this important treatment are not commonplace in the United States (we identified 229 facilities that provide blood, marrow and/ or stem cell transplantation services in the conterminous United States, which includes the lower 48 states and Washington DC).…”
