Studies of otoliths suggest that Gobioidei, which are among the most species-rich groups of modern-day vertebrates, were prominent elements of late middle Miocene (early Sarmatian sensu lato) fish faunas in Europe and Western Asia. However, few complete skeletons have come to light. Here, we report an assemblage of six marine gobiid species, based on skeletons preserved with otoliths in situ, from the lower Volhynian (lower Sarmatian s.l.) of Karpov Yar, Naslavcea, northern Moldova (Eastern Paratethys). Previously only one of these species had been reported from the Central Paratethys, based on its otoliths alone. Five new species representing four new genera are described: †Katyagobius prikryli gen. et sp. nov., Pseudolesueurigobius manfredi gen. et sp. nov., †Sarmatigobius compactus gen. et sp. nov., †Yarigobius decoratus gen. et sp. nov., and †Y. naslavcensis gen. et sp. nov. All six species share the following set of characters, suggesting that they represent a monophyletic clade: 27–29 vertebrae (of which 10 are abdominal); spines of first dorsal fin distally filamentous; second dorsal fin with spine and 14–16 soft rays; anal fin with spine and 13–15 soft rays; caudal fin longish-to-lanceolate; otoliths (sagittae) with rounded, trapezoid-to-squarish shape. Their skeletal features suggest that they are closely related to Lesueurigobius Whitley, 1950, but the otoliths preserved in situ do not support such a classification. The new fossils most likely represent a stem lineage of the European Aphia lineage, and indicate that the diversity of gobiid lineages 12 million years ago differed clearly from that observed today.

The mid-late Miocene is an important interval in the evolution of global climate through the Cenozoic, representing a key period in the transition out of the warm, dynamic climate state of the Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO) into a more stable unipolar icehouse world (Badger et al., 2013; Foster et al., 2012; Greenop et al., 2014; Sosdian et al., 2018). Despite being characterized by similar to modern day atmospheric CO 2 concentrations (Foster et al., 2012; Sosdian et al., 2018; Super et al., 2018), middle Miocene mean global temperatures were likely significantly warmer than the modern day (Pound et al., 2011; Rousselle et al., 2013). This has been used to suggest a decoupling of global temperature and atmospheric CO 2 forcing (LaRiviere et al., 2012; Pagani et al., 1999), a characteristic which general circulation models struggle to simulate (Knorr et al., 2011; von der Heydt & Dijkstra, 2006). It has also been suggested that the late Miocene was an additional important key step in the transition to our modern climate state, as high latitudes cooled more than low latitudes, leading to a marked steepening of latitudinal temperature gradients (Herbert et al., 2016). The late Miocene Cooling (LMC) between ∼ 7.5 and 5.5 Ma was a global phenomenon (Herbert et al., 2016) perhaps associated with decreasing atmospheric pCO 2 (Stoll et al., 2019). The increase in the equator to pole surface temperature gradients was not associated with an increase in the benthic foraminiferal oxygen isotope record, implying that it occurred in the absence of a large increase in continental ice volume (Herbert et al., 2016). Polar amplification in the LMC is consistent with estimates for other time intervals (e.g., Cramwinckel et al., 2018). However, the LMC was also preceded by a significant cooling of mid to high southern and northern latitudes, a heterogenous cooling at high northern latitudes, and a muted, limited cooling in the tropics (Herbert et al., 2016). This heterogenous cooling perhaps suggests an unusually high polar amplification factor for the interval immediately preceding the LMC. Potential changes in the Earth System that could impact the magnitude of polar amplification include sea ice extent, vegetation induced changes in albedo, cloud cover, or ocean-atmosphere heat transport. Abstract. High-resolution geochronology is essential for determining the growth rate of volcanoes, which is one of the key factors for establishing the periodicity of volcanic eruptions. However, there are less high-resolution eruptive histories (> 106 years) determined for long-lived submarine arc volcanic complexes than for subaerial complexes, since submarine volcanoes are far more difficult to observe than subaerial ones. In this study, high-resolution geochronology and major-element data are presented for the Milos volcanic field (VF) in the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, Greece. The Milos VF has been active for over 3 Myr, and the first 2 × 106 years of its eruptive history occurred in a submarine setting that has been emerged above sea level. The long submarine volcanic history of the Milos VF makes it an excellent natural laboratory to study the growth rate of a long-lived submarine arc volcanic complex. This study reports 21 new high-precision 40Ar/39Ar ages and major-element compositions for 11 volcanic units of the Milos VF. This allows us to divide the Milos volcanic history into at least three periods of different long-term volumetric volcanic output rate (Qe). Periods I (submarine, ∼ 3.3–2.13 Ma) and III (subaerial, 1.48 Ma–present) have a low Qe of 0.9 ± 0.5 × 10−5 and 0.25 ± 0.05 × 10−5 km3 yr−1, respectively. Period II (submarine, 2.13–1.48 Ma) has a 3–12 times higher Qe of 3.0 ± 1.7 × 10−5 km3 yr−1. The Qe of the Milos VF is 2–3 orders of magnitude lower than the average for rhyolitic systems and continental arcs.
