The new Simrad EK60 scientific echo sounder system

Abstract: A widely used tool for fish abundance estimation and other marine research is the scientific echo sounder. Acoustic information obtained from scientific echo sounders such as target strength and target position can be valuable for describing individual targets whereas measurements of volume backscattering strength are suitable for describing a large number of targets distributed over a volume of water. The new Simrad EK60 scientific echo sounder system provides high-quality target strength, target position, an… Show more

“…Multi-frequency acoustic data were collected with a Simrad EK500 scientific echo sounder (1999)(2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008) and a Simrad EK60 scientific echo sounder (2009 -to present) (Bodholt et al 1989;Andersen 2001). Data collected during 1999-2004 are detailed in Jech and Michaels (2006).…”

“…Simrad EK-60 general purpose tranducers/transceivers (38 and 120 kHz) are routinely used on ships to [26] estimate fish abundance and other marine research. Sound pulses are generated from these tranducers and are differentially absorbed and reflected off organisms in the water.…”

“…This methodology has been applied here based on the Simrad EK60 scientific echo sounder operating at 18, 38, 70, 120, 200, and 333 kHz. 19 The split-beam transducer beamwidths at 18 and 38 kHz were 11 and 7 deg, respectively, with both transmitting sinusoidal signals in 1-ms bursts.…”
